Commissioned by Scott McLaughlin as part of his AHRC composition project, the Feedback Clarinet aims to take a standard clarinet and replace the reed as the mechanism for sounding the instrument, with an air-pressure-controlled feedback system.
Initial results were really promising, with the instrument responding quickly and repeatably to fingerings but, as it always the case, the detail is where it gets hard. I am currently trying to get the pressure sensor to range in a way that requires rather less puff but we are getting closer to a playable instrument.
Once at that point, it will be sent to Scott for him to try out. This is the step I relish most.
